Highlights and balayage are hand-placed colour: lighter pieces painted or foiled where they catch the light, so the regrowth is soft and the result grows out kindly. Balayage is painted freehand for a blended, sun-touched effect; foils give a more defined, evenly spaced lift; babylights are very fine pieces close to the natural shade.
Because the time depends on your length, density and starting colour, the chair comes before the quote. Dark or previously coloured hair may need more than one visit to reach a light shade safely, and the studio will say so rather than push it in one sitting. Placement, tone and the finish are agreed before the first foil.

- 01Placement conversation
Where you want light, how soft the regrowth should be, and your hair’s colour history.
- 02Sectioning and placement
Painted or foiled, piece by piece, as agreed.
- 03Processing
Watched at the chair; lifted only as far as your hair allows today.
- 04Toning
The tone is corrected and refined after the lift.
- 05Finish
Wash, treatment and a blow-dry so you see the placement as it will fall.
Tell the studio first
- Previous colour, henna, smoothing or bleach, and roughly when.
- How often you can realistically come back for toning.
- Reference photos in daylight: tone reads differently under studio light.
Aftercare, usually
- Use a shampoo and conditioner made for lightened hair; a purple or toning product helps if the tone turns warm.
- Heat protection before styling, and less heat where you can.
- Book a toner or gloss when the tone starts to drift.
- Follow the aftercare the studio gives you for the products used.
