Keratin and smoothing treatments use a product worked through the hair and sealed with heat to reduce frizz and make hair easier to style. How sleek the result is, and how long it stays, varies with the product, your hair and your routine at home.
Because it is a chemical service, it starts with a consultation at the chair. The studio looks at your hair’s condition, its colour and henna history, and the result you have in mind, and says plainly if smoothing is not the right choice.
If it is suitable, you are given the price, the time to set aside and the aftercare rules before agreeing. Length and thickness change the work involved, so smoothing is quoted in writing once the studio has seen your hair.

- 01Suitability check
Your hair history, condition and goals are discussed, and a strand or patch test suggested if needed.
- 02Plan and quote
The product, the expected result and the aftercare are explained, with the price confirmed in writing.
- 03Wash and prepare
Hair is washed with a preparing shampoo and dried to the stage the product needs.
- 04Apply
The product is applied section by section, kept away from the scalp where the method requires.
- 05Seal
Hair is dried and then sealed with a flat iron in fine sections.
- 06Rules for home
You are told when you can first wash, tie or pin your hair, as this depends on the product used.
Tell the studio first
- Any colour, lightening, henna or chemical service you have had, even a while ago.
- Pregnancy, sensitivity to strong smells or fumes, or any scalp condition.
- Any previous smoothing or straightening, and how your hair reacted.
- Photos of the finish you hope for, so expectations are matched to your hair.
Aftercare, usually
- Follow the studio’s timing for the first wash; it is specific to the product used.
- Many smoothing products do well with a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo, so ask what suits yours.
- Avoid tight bands, clips or tucking hair behind your ears in the early days if the studio asks you to.
- Follow the aftercare the studio gives you for the smoothing product used.
