Gel polish
Gel polish is nail colour set under a lamp, so it is dry when you leave and usually wears longer than regular polish, with careful removal when it is time.

Gel polish / At Bharti’s
What it is,
and how it’s done here.
Gel polish is applied like regular polish but hardened, or cured, under a lamp after each layer. It is dry when you leave and usually resists chipping for longer than ordinary polish, though wear always depends on your nails and how you use your hands.
The care is in the preparation and the removal. The studio shapes and preps your nails, applies thin layers and, when it is time to change, soaks or files the old gel off gently rather than lifting it, protecting your natural nail as far as possible.
Before starting, you are told the price and the time for application, removal or both. Gel with nail art or several colours is priced up front, and in writing if the design is detailed.
Your appointment
Gel polish,
step by step.
- 01Removal, if needed
Old gel is taken off gently before anything new goes on.
- 02Shape and prep
Nails are shaped, cuticles tidied and the surface prepared so the gel can grip.
- 03Base coat
A thin base layer is applied and set under the lamp.
- 04Colour
Thin coats of colour go on, each one cured in turn.
- 05Finish
A finishing coat is cured, wiped and checked, then cuticle oil goes on.
Tell the studio first
- Any past reaction to gel, acrylic or nail glue, such as itching or redness around the nail.
- Whether you already have gel or extensions on, so removal is planned in.
- Any sensitivity to nail lamps, or medication that makes your skin sensitive to light.
Aftercare, usually
- Use cuticle oil daily to keep the nail and the skin around it supple.
- Wear gloves for cleaning and washing up.
- Do not use your nails as tools for opening cans or scraping labels.
- Book removal at the studio rather than peeling gel off as it grows out.
- Follow the aftercare the studio gives you for the gel products used.
