A manicure looks after the nails and the hands around them. A classic manicure shapes the nails, tidies the cuticles and finishes with polish. A spa manicure goes further, with a soak, a scrub, a mask and a hand massage.
At the nail bar, the studio first looks at your nails and asks how you use your hands: whether you type all day, cook, garden or wear rings. Shape, length and finish are chosen to suit that, not just the photograph.
The service, the price and the time to allow are agreed before the file comes out. If you add nail art or extensions, the studio confirms the new total, in writing for anything detailed.

- 01Look and choose
Your nails are checked and you choose the shape, length and colour.
- 02Remove and shape
Old polish comes off and nails are filed to the agreed shape.
- 03Soak and cuticles
Hands are soaked, then cuticles are softened and gently pushed back.
- 04Scrub and massage
For a spa manicure, a scrub, mask and massage follow.
- 05Polish
A base coat, colour and finishing coat, applied in clean, thin layers.
- 06Set and check
You look over the finish while the polish sets, before reaching for your bag.
Tell the studio first
- Any allergy to nail products, lotions or fragrance.
- Cuts, redness or soreness around the nails.
- A photo of the colour or shape you want, if you have one.
Aftercare, usually
- Give regular polish time to set before handling bags, keys or zips.
- Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning to protect the finish.
- Massage a little cuticle oil or hand cream in each evening.
- Follow the aftercare the studio gives you for the polish and products used.
